Valente Pali’s “Protect Sun” Shadow system is the perfect solution to properly protecting your crops from damages caused by the sun and wind. Let’s take a look at this structure and the components to determine what makes this system top tier.

The Shadow System is designed to protect orchards cultivated with V-shaped, vase-shaped, or high-stemmed trunk plants. The system is put together with pre-stressed concrete piles and is set at a maximum height of 5 m above the ground, at a distance of 10 m along the rows. It’s connected both longitudinally and transversely with wires and cables anchored along the border for stability and safety.

Let’s break this down a little further

The system consists of several components, the first of which is the Shading Net. The net is used to protect crops from damage caused by the sun and wind. It’s made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and by weaving in plastic monofilaments (using a technique called loom weaving), the net gets its shading ability.

The Shading also has different rates, 30%, 50%, 75% and 90% to carry out different functions: shading, windbreaking, anti-hail and anti-insect. The net also comes in 2 different colours. Black, which is recommended for all fruits, and Kristall, which is recommended for fruits with colouring problems.

Smaller components within the Shadow System

Next up we have Hoods. The Hoods are plastic caps on top of the concrete piles. They are self locking and are used to fasten the lengthwise and transversal cables previously mentioned. They also protect the net from taking any damages that could be caused by the rough textures of the concrete piles e.g. the net ripping or tearing. Read more about Hoods here!
